How to Be Politically Correct

With the holiday season coming up, it's important to think about what you say to other people before going on a long, restful vacation- the last thing you want before taking a break is leaving a bad impression. Here are some helpful tips to consider:

Now, you might think that simply saying "Merry Christmas!" is perfectly fine. Wrong. Saying "Merry Christmas" implies that only the Christian holiday, Christmas, is worth celebrating, thus you are not being considerate of other religions or cultures. And why are you assuming that the holiday being celebrated will be merry? What if a family is going through a rough patch? How could you be so inconsiderate of other people's struggles?

With "Merry Christmas" out of the bag, you're probably convinced that "Happy Holidays" will encompass all religions. Wrong again. Not everyone celebrates a holiday at all during this period, so why would you assume that a person will have "happy holidays?" Once again, what if these holidays are not happy? How could you be so ignorant of other cultures?

You're wondering what else you could possibly say at this point. Well, let's forge a farewell together! First, we have to address everyone's emotions, not just the happy people. So, taking an average of all emotions being felt at this current moment, let's just say "neutral." Next, we must choose a day that anyone can celebrate, regardless of their beliefs. How about "days?" Sounds good. Putting this together, we can say, "Neutral Days!" before going on break. Fantastic, right? Not so fast. What if it isn't daytime for a specific individual in a different timezone? We can't afford to offend those people. Being considerate, let's agree upon "Neutral Times!" Perfect. Now, we can be polite to others without offending any culture, religion, belief, geographical location, timezone, climate, or even planet!

Good job for choosing to be politically correct this holiday season! Your efforts will be fruitful in the years to come. Give yourself a pat on the back! Neutral Times to everyone!

  1. Your over analyzation of the term Merry Christmas practically encapsulates how it feels to live in today's society. Well written!

  2. A very interesting take on the topic of political correctness. It accurately reveals how people overuse the term to the point where it becomes a joke and hackneyed phrase.
